The Call for Action on World Humanitarian Day
This August 20th, as countries across the globe recognize World Humanitarian Day, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is issuing a powerful plea for the protection of humanitarian workers. In the face of rising violence—where 383 aid workers were killed in 2024 alone and the current year, 2025, is already on course to be one of the deadliest yet—urgent action is required to safeguard those delivering life-saving assistance.
The Rising Threat to Humanitarian Workers
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), reports reveal a staggering trend: as of mid-August 2025, 265 humanitarian workers have been killed, with many more injured or abducted. This violence occurs against a backdrop of growing global instability, where the needs for humanitarian assistance have risen sharply due to conflicts displacing over 73.5 million people from their homes by the end of 2024.
The Role of International Humanitarian Law
IOM Director General Amy Pope highlights that international humanitarian law clearly protects these essential workers. Yet, despite this protection, attacks continue to escalate, often with impunity for the perpetrators. Pope urges member states to take decisive action and show political will to halt these alarming trends, emphasizing that when humanitarian workers are silenced, it is the poorest and most vulnerable in society who suffer the most.
A Commitment to Safety
The message is clear: honoring the service and sacrifice of humanitarian workers requires a collective effort to ensure their safety. As nations observe World Humanitarian Day, let us rally together to remember those who bravely put their lives on the line for others, advocating for stronger protections and holding violators accountable.
