Sandals Resorts to Reopen Some Properties After Hurricane Melissa
In a significant update following Hurricane Melissa’s devastating impact, Sandals Resorts is set to reopen several properties in Jamaica starting from December 6, 2025. This decision comes after thorough assessments confirmed that the affected resorts are ready to welcome guests once again. Among the reopening properties are the renowned Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Ochi, Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Negril, and Beaches Negril.
Gary C. Sadler, the Executive Vice President of Sales and Industry Relations for Sandals Resorts, expressed a heartfelt appreciation for the support received during the recovery process. "It has been profoundly moving to experience the care and support from the community and our industry partners during these challenging times," he stated.
The company has chosen a single reopening date across its properties to allow team members time to recuperate and attend to their families affected by the storm. This decision underlines the company’s commitment to the well-being of their employees, who faced immense challenges due to the hurricane.
Longer Wait for Some Resorts
However, the company announced that three resorts – Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Caribbean, and Sandals South Coast – will remain closed until May 30, 2026, as they require additional renovations. This extended closure reflects the significant damages these properties sustained, which include structural impairments and extensive renovations necessary to ensure guest safety.
Jamaica’s Tourism Sector Shows Resilience
In a broader context, Jamaica's Ministry of Tourism is striving to have the island’s tourism sector fully operational by December 15, 2025. According to Philip Rose, the Deputy Director of Tourism, many hotels faced various issues, from minor flooding to severe power outages. Other hotel operators, like Hyatt, have also announced temporary suspensions of operations through January 2026, showcasing the extensive impact Hurricane Melissa had on the region's hospitality sector.
