Honduras Achieves Macroeconomic Stability Amidst Challenges
The mission team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently concluded discussions with Honduran authorities, culminating in a crucial staff-level agreement on both the Sixth and Final Reviews of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangements. This agreement, along with the completion of the 2026 Article IV consultation, emphasizes a commitment to maintaining macroeconomic stability and fostering growth, even in the face of significant external and climate challenges.
Resilience Through Prudent Policies
The discussions highlighted how Honduras has navigated economic turbulence through sound policies, showcasing resilience amid issues like rising energy prices and environmental shocks. The authorities have embraced a non-financial public sector deficit target of 1 percent of GDP for 2026–27, a strategic move aimed at balancing fiscal responsibility and social welfare.
Progressing Towards A Brighter Future
Emilio Fernandez Corugedo, the IMF mission chief, stressed the importance of ongoing reforms, which include modernizing monetary frameworks and enhancing governance. These steps are crucial for achieving sustainable growth and ensuring that benefits reach all sectors of society, particularly vulnerable communities impacted by economic strains.
Economic Performance and Growth Forecasts
The Honduran economy exhibited a respectable growth rate of 3.7 percent in the first half of 2026, although projections suggest a slight decrease to 3.4 percent by year-end. The current account recorded a surplus of 4.1 percent of GDP in the first half, albeit expected to transition to a deficit of 2.2 percent for the full year. Despite inflation rates rising to 6.3 percent, the core inflation remained under control at 3.5 percent.
The Role of External Support
As Honduras prepares for the IMF’s executive board review slated for December 2026, access to roughly USD 120 million hinges on the successful continuation of these prudent economic policies. This assistance not only stabilizes Honduras’ economy but also bolsters international confidence in its developmental roadmap, especially during unpredictable global uncertainties.
Community and Environmental Considerations
The authorities are also cognizant of the significant pressure endured by households from fluctuating energy prices. Thus, targeted social assistance and subsidies are necessary, albeit framed in a manner that encourages energy-saving practices, ensuring fiscal responsibility is coupled with social equity.
