A Beacon of Hope: Bronx Borough President Honors Domestic Violence Survivors
On October 14, Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson once again led the important initiative of the DiVA Spa, celebrating its 24th year, an event dedicated to Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Hosted in the inviting Rotunda of Bronx Borough Hall, this year's Spa welcomed survivors of domestic and gender-based violence to a day filled with much-needed self-care.
In light of the ongoing societal challenges faced by many in the Bronx community, Gibson emphasized the importance of self-care and accessibility to critical resources. “We are providing a day of pampering for the clients who have gathered here today,” she stated, highlighting that this initiative serves not only as a respite but also as a platform for connecting individuals with essential services such as counseling and legal aid.
Empowering Survivors: Resources Galore
This year’s event saw a convergence of city agencies, local organizations, and licensed professionals from the beauty industry. Partners like Montefiore Einstein and Safe Horizon were present, offering on-site support and information to attendees. “For 24 years, DiVA Spa has given survivors a space to feel seen and celebrated,” Gibson noted, reinforcing the Spa's role as a hub for empowerment and healing.
Utilizing the intersection of beauty and wellness, the event offered attendees complimentary facials, makeovers, and haircuts. While experiencing these pampering services, survivors could also engage with resources that promote ongoing healing and resilience.
Ongoing Need for Awareness and Action
With the DiVA Spa being a key part of the “31 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence” campaign, Gibson’s efforts mirror a larger movement to address and mitigate the devastating effects of domestic violence in the community. The statistics are sobering, yet events like DiVA Spa serve as a reminder that change begins at the community level.
As we continue toward a future where domestic violence is not the norm, initiatives such as DiVA Spa emphasize the need for ongoing conversations and actions surrounding domestic violence. “Thank you to all our partners for ensuring our survivors receive the holistic support they need to continue to be victors and not victims of their circumstances,” Gibson concluded, sending a strong message of hope and resilience.
